Born and raised in Port Elizabeth, relocated to Johannesburg 1992 to complete Matric at 16 at Studywell College Braamfontein. Took a 6 month sabbatical to do Journalism diploma at Birnham College, of which he completed and went back to Studywell to complete his Matric.
The career deciding event - A political march through the streets of Braamfontein where he saw
renowned photo journalists, Joao Silva and Ken Oosterbroek covering the march. That was the
moment he know what he wanted to be - a news photographer. In the final stages of his Matric he
happened to be in Bree Street when a car bomb exploded, he was already carrying a camera.
He captured the event and within a few hours had processed and developed the film - it was
syndicated worldwide by Associated Press and made front pages news. A news photographer was born...
He continued working as a freelance photographer for a number of high profile publications
enjoying the independence this gave him.
In 2000 he began a 2 year study course in broadcast television, documentary production and
camera work at Wits University. He did exceptionally well and was due to graduate with
distinction in October 2002, he died in his sleep on the 19th August 2002.
The Head of the Faculty at Wits had always considered that they were likely to loose Ken on the
killing fields in the Middle East, or riots and unrest in Africa as he resumed his news
activities, never to guess that it would be peacefully in his sleep at the tender age of only 25.
The autopsy report stated, Fibrosis of the heart.
Paul Hills, ex news editor at ETV spoke at the funeral. Kenneth was way ahead of his game.
Pamela Hamilton, Director and editor of PictureNet Africa - a quiet soul, with a passion for
photography and an eye for making a picture that would tell a story.
